Is higher welfare really that important?

Yes! Here’s why:

The commercial choice:

We know that as consumers become more welfare aware, they are voting with their wallets and are increasingly choosing to buy higher-welfare produce. Don’t believe us? Here’s some data from our recent surveys to prove it:

  • 78% of people who consume animal products say they thought their shopping choices could make a positive difference to the lives of farmed animals.
  • 84% of people think animal welfare should be protected by the government through legislation.
73% of people are concerned about the welfare of animals we farm for food.
  • 60% of people said that poor animal welfare would motivate them to stop consuming animal products.
  • More than half of UK adults would be more likely to buy a product if it had the RSPCA Assured logo on it.
  • RSPCA Assured is ranked as the first choice for shoppers looking for animal welfare assurance.

What have we done for trout welfare?

There are over 800 standards that protect the welfare of RSPCA Assured trout - here’s a quick look at some of our key achievements:

  • 2015 - RSPCA welfare standards developed for rainbow trout.
  • 2020 - Introduction of standards for the use of wellboats in the transport of rainbow trout.
  • 2025 - Re-introduction of welfare outcome assessments with new protocols. Introduced CCTV at the time of slaughter.
