We announced some ambitious proposals in 2021, such as our intention to see more than half of all UK farm animals reared to RSPCA welfare standards by 2030. Despite the many challenges of 2021, we had a fantastic year and think we're well on our way to achieving our goals.
2020 was a difficult yet rewarding year for us, as well as adapting to a new way of working, we also began working closely with Tesco to develop a new higher welfare indoor chicken range (Room to Roam) and to put our logo on all of Tesco’s own-brand eggs.
2019 marked our 25th anniversary. This milestone gave us an opportunity to look back on how far we have come since Freedom Food was established in 1994 as a farm animal welfare certification scheme for laying hens and pigs.
We saw a distinct shift in food consumption behaviours with the rise of veganism, ethical buying and increasing environmental awareness. Co-op became the first UK-wide retailer to switch to 100% outdoor bred RSPCA Assured pork.
Marks & Spencer's became the first major retailer to source its non-organic, fresh milk from RSPCA Assured dairy farms. This was a major step forward for dairy cow welfare and we hope other retailers will follow suit.
2016 was a great year for us, with increased support for the new RSPCA Assured label translating into increased numbers of producers and more animals benefiting from the scheme. And at the end of the day, that's what it’s all about!
